How to wash a comforter (and other bulky items) at a laundromat
Check the care label first, then use a washer big enough that the comforter can move freely - that is why people bring them to a laundromat. Wash on a gentle or bedding cycle with the normal amount of detergent and an extra rinse, then dry on low heat with dryer balls, fluffing it every 20 minutes or so until it is completely dry.
Step by step
Read the care label
The label tells you the water temperature, the cycle and whether the item can be machine washed at all. Take "dry-clean only" items to a professional dry cleaner [1][2].
Check for stains and tears
Pre-treat any stains and sew up small tears first so they don't get bigger in the wash [2].
Pick a washer with room to spare
A comforter squashed into a drum won't wash properly. If it doesn't fit comfortably, a bigger washer is the answer - one easy test is a hand's width of space at the top of a front-loading drum [2][3]. At Jax's, use one of the 4-load or 6-load washers.
Use a gentle or bedding cycle
Choose a gentle, delicate or bedding cycle and the water temperature on the label; cold or lukewarm water is the usual advice [2][3].
Use the normal amount of detergent
You don't need more detergent just because the item is bulky [2]. Too much detergent can leave clothes less clean, not more [4].
Add an extra rinse
An additional rinse helps get rid of remaining suds and detergent [2][3].
Dry low, fluff often, finish completely
Dry on low heat with a couple of dryer balls to break up clumps, and pause about every 20 minutes to fluff and redistribute it [3]. Make sure it is completely dry before you use or store it - dampness leads to mold and mildew [2][3].
Other bulky items
The same rules work for sleeping bags, blankets and dog beds: read the label, give the item room in a bigger washer, don't overload the washer or the dryer [1][4], and make sure it comes out completely dry.
